A local councillor has hit out at the level of abuse online that was encountered towards Heather Humphreys during the presidential campaign.
Cllr Sean Gilliland said there is no place in society for sectarian abuse and it needs to be called out.
Speaking to Northern Sound over the weekend, Fine Gael presidential candidate Heather Humphreys said her family was subject to awful sectarian abuse during the campaign. Cllr Gilliland says its shocking that this level sectarian abuse of is occurring.
He said while this abuse exists, an united Ireland will never happen. Heather Humphreys conceded defeat to Catherine Connolly before the final results were announced, and she insisted she has no regrets about running.
When asked about what is next for Heather Humphreys to Cllr Gilliland, he said he wouldn't be surprised that Heather Humphreys will take on a role in some shape or form in representing the people of Cavan and Monaghan. Cllr Gilliland says this abuse needs to be called out.
