Local Authority calls on government to introduces a "specific offence" of stalking

Cathy Bennett is urging the introduction of "clear and concise stalking legislation".

Monaghan County Council is to write to the acting Minister of Justice, Heather Humphreys, requesting that the government introduces a "specific offence of stalking".

Currently, stalking is prosecuted under harassment laws.

However, Sinn Féin's Cathy Bennett is calling for "clear and concise stalking legislation in Ireland".

She says stalking is distinct from harassment, as it is "a pattern of behaviour that is more intense and sinister".

Councillor Bennett told Northern Sound that the sentences handed down for stalking should be lengthened:
