Monaghan County Council has passed a motion calling for 2020 Leaving Cert students to be able to attend the Third Level Education or apprenticeship of their choice.

The motion was raised by Fianna Fáil's Aoife McCooey, who said Leaving Cert students should be given certainty after the disruption that COVID-19 has caused.

The motion was met with some opposition, with fellow Fianna Fáil Councillor PJ O'Hanlon acknowledging that some students could "get through the cracks".

However, he said it should nevertheless supported the motion, as students will have to pass the same exams in order to advance to the second year.

Councillor McCooey told Shannonside Northern Sound that it's important to break down barriers to third-level education after the disruption caused by COVID-19:
