A local councillor is calling on the Government to urgently regulate the sale and supply of nitrous oxide, which is commonly known as laughing gas.
The issue was raised by Noel Connell at the latest meeting Cavan County Council amid growing concern about young people accessing the substance online.
Research indicates a serious increase in cases linked to nitrous oxide use, including spinal cord injuries, nerve damage and paralysis.
While the gas has uses, such as in dentistry and childbirth, Cllr Connell says it can currently be purchased at the press of a button without restriction.
He is concerned that people, particularly young people, are unaware of the serious effects of misusing the substance.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the Sinn Fein councillor warned the substance can cause lasting damage or even suffocation
