A local Green Party representative says the CETA trade deal treaty has caused a lot of unrest within the party.

CETA is set to be referred to an Oireachtas committee for scrutiny of the issues involved.

It follows calls from Cavan and Monaghan County Councils for more time to be allowed to fully examine the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada.

There are concerns among environmentalists about parts of the deal that may allow investors to sue the state for policy decisions that damage their profits.

A vote on the controversial deal was postponed before Christmas due to serious concerns in the Green Party.
