A local meteorologist says temperatures will breach 30 degrees in many places today.

Met Éireann's Gerry Murphy, who hails from Carrickmacross, says the weather will be at its hottest in-land, with the midlands also predicted to see high temperatures.

The hottest temperature in the country yesterday was recorded as 29.3 degrees in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, while the Ballyhaise weather station recorded a high of 27.4 degrees.

A Status Yellow High Temperature warning is in place today, but Gerry told this morning's Joe Finnegan Show that it will be short-lived and temperatures will reduce tomorrow, with some showery rain:

Meanwhile on the continent, Italy is experiencing its fifth heatwave so far this year.

Monaghan native Kate Macklin lives in northern Italy and says the region where she lives hasn't seen rain since the beginning of May.

She told this morning's Joe Finnegan Show that temperatures reached 38 degrees yesterday and is causing serious drought conditions:
