New ESRI research shows €5 billion in tax hikes are likely needed in the years.

A local People Before Profit representative says tax increases shouldn’t hit “middle earners”.

Donna Coffey is the regional press officer for the Party in Cavan/Monaghan and added that there should be no tax increases on those earning below €90,000.

It comes amid new ESRI research which shows €5 billion in tax hikes are likely needed in the years ahead to fill expected future spending holes.

ESRI says this is because of potential drops in corporation and motor tax receipts, and Donna has called for the elimination of “loopholes” in corporation tax.

The research also reveals that putting up the standard and higher rates of income tax by 1% would raise almost €1 billion per year.

But Donna told the Joe Finnegan Show that any tax increases should be done in a “progressive way”:
