Local pet owners are being told to take the necessary steps to prevent their animal being stolen.

There's been an increased demand for pets during lockdown in Ireland, with some turning to theft to supply the market.

Gardai are asking anyone whose pet is missing to publicise it as much as possible on social media and websites such as DoneDeal.

Sinead McKenna from MSPCA says they haven't received reports of dogs going missing locally, but owners should still take precautions.

As well as securing your garden and microchipping your animal, she said it could be helpful to highlight if your dog is neutered.
