A local senator has highlighted the need for more pathologists across the country.
Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher said the grieving families are increasingly having to delay funerals for relatives because of hold-ups in carrying out post-mortems in multiple counties.
Around 6,000 post-mortems are carried out in Ireland annually, ordered by coroners after a sudden, unexplained, violent or unnatural death.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher explained what impact the situation is having across the region.
He said it is a very sensitive and emotional time for families.
Senator Gallagher said: "It's a very sensitive and emotional time for a family when they lose a loved one.
"Sometimes when there is a delay in getting the post-mortem carried out, more so and the weekend and bank holidays, its an added stress, and emotional strain on the family," he added.
