A local senator is warning that rising global instability highlights a need for stronger Irish Defence Forces, despite remaining militarily neutral.
Senator Joe O'Reilly cited a number of conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar, as well as tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as evidence of an increasingly uncertain world.
He said modern threats now include cyber warfare, noting the 2021 HSE cyber-attack as an example of Ireland's vulnerability.
The Fine Gael Senator welcomed improvements in recruitment, pay and conditions within the Army, but said further investment is needed.
Speaking to Northern Sound he noted Ireland's neutrality is very important to many people including himself, but we have to acknowledge we are in a changing world.
