A report from Teagasc has found that farmers experience a seven times higher mortality rate in the working age range, compared with white collar workers.
The research also found that farmers experience a five times higher incidence of cardiovascular issues, and a five time higher incidence of cancer.
Local Senator, Robbie Gallagher raised the issue in the Seanad last week.
He highlighted that often farmers do not go to the doctor, and when they do, it is normally as a result of a problem they are facing.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said that simple things can make a big difference for farmers.
At a busy time of the year, he highlighted the pressure farmers are under.
Senator Gallagher said: "The other big thing is stress. A lot of the work is done on your own.
"When the sun is shining and the ground is dry, then there is silage to be cut, crops to be put in -- the pressure is always on. That brings it's own stress.
"As farmers know, beef prices are on the floor. For a lot of farmers, who bought cattle at the back end of last year, they're taking them to the mart - and they're not getting the money they should be getting.
"That financial pressure builds up too, and causes more stress. It's not good for your health," he added.
