Local Senator Robbie Gallagher, has welcomed the introduction of screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) under the National Newborn Bloodspot Screening Programme.
Starting this week, all newborn screening samples will be tested for the two additional conditions, bringing the total number of conditions screened for to eleven.
Senator Gallagher said: The addition of SCID and SMA to the new-born screening programme means that these serious conditions can be identified at the earliest possible stage.
He also acknowledged the work of healthcare professionals involved in expanding the programme.
According to the Senator, it is a step in the right direction, and one that will be warmly welcomed by families across Cavan, Monaghan and beyond.
