Sinn Féin TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Pauline Tully, has called for support in addressing the recruitment and retention crisis within the Retained Fire Service.

Public representatives say the service is no longer fit for purpose after a recent survey revealed that 60% of its recruits intend to leave in the near future while many plan to opt out within the next year.

Deputy Tully told Northern Sound there was a lack of "political leadership" from Minister Darragh O'Brien to resolve the matter.

She pointed to the Sinn Fein motion calling for the establishment of a cross-party Joint Oireachtas Committee to conduct a full and independent review of how the national retained fire service is delivered across the State.

Deputy Tully highlighted how it was an invaluable service for communities and failure to address the problems placed the health and safety of workers and members of the public in danger.
