Local TD hits out at border poll comments

The comments have been criticised.

The Taoiseach and British Prime Minister have ruled out the possibility of a border poll in the coming years.

Micheál Martin says now is the time to reduce tensions in the North and engage in dialogue.

A referendum on the reunification of Ireland is “a very, very long time to come”.

That's what British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told a BBC Spotlight programme which airs this evening.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has also dismissed the prospect of an early border poll, describing it as "explosive and divisive".

Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy thinks the comments of both men are reckless:

The Taoiseach will also appear on the BBC spotlight programme later, where he will say that stipulating dates for a border referendum is unhelpful and he would prefer to see real engagement and discussions.
