A local Fianna Fáil TD says too many people "catch on to any so-called cause" as an excuse to give "guff and trouble" to the police.

Brendan Smith's comments follow scenes outside the UK Parliament yesterday where Labour leader Keir Starmer was harassed by protesters and had to flee in a police car.

False accusations by the UK Prime Minister regarding Starmer seemed to prompt the confrontation, after Boris Johnson wrongly claimed the former lawyer had failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile in his previous job.

Two people have since been arrested in relation to the incident.

He told The Wider View that people need to "adhere to the truth" and voice their opposition to politicians in a democratic manner:
