Local women in danger without access to emergency accommodation

That's according to Mary McDermott who is Chief Executive Officer of Safe Ireland

Women across Cavan and Monaghan will remain in "dangerous situations" as long as there is no emergency accommodation for them to access.

That's according to Mary McDermott who is Chief Executive Officer of Safe Ireland.

With no refuge centre to provide emergency accommodation in Cavan or Monaghan, Mary has warned that women remain in dangerous situations because of the risk that they or their children would become homeless.

According to Mary, Safe Ireland and other organisations have been "waiting years" for the publication of the domestic violence guidelines for homelessness to local authorities from the department of housing.

Mary says this would enable local county councils like Cavan and Monaghan to provide support for domestic abuse victims because right now they "are not recognised" as homeless.

As a result of this, local authorities cannot provide the help that is needed.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Mary said it's important for local authorities to come together to provide accommodation pathways for those who need it most:
