Man arrested over 'suspicious device' discovered in Carrickmacross

Investigations are ongoing.

A second person has been arrested after a suspicious device was discovered on the N2 in Carrickmacross.

A man aged in his 40’shas since been arrested in connection with the investigation, and is detained pursuant to Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 (as amended), at a Garda station in the Dublin region.

Northern Sound FM understands that the suspicious device was a viable bomb that had the potential of causing significant damage if it had to detonate made of semtex and was being brought across the border.

At approximately 3pm on Wednesday, members of An Garda Síochána attached to SDU (Special Detective Unit) stopped a vehicle travelling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross.

Following the vehicle being stopped, An Garda Síochána requested the assistance of the Irish Defence Forces EOD team.

The armed support unit intercepted the vehicle, closing the N2 for a number of hours and it's also understood that a number of houses in the locality were evacuated at the time too.

It's believed the operation is extremely sensitive to national security.

The EOD team completed an examination of the vehicle. The outcome is not being released for operational reasons.

A female aged in her 20’s the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and continues to be detained. Investigations are ongoing.
