Man who killed a nun in Ballybay set to be released from prison

Sister Philomena was a widely respected nun and teacher who was waiting on the bus when she was set upon

A man who killed a nun in Co Monaghan in 2001 is set to be released from prison.

Keelan Herron, who is now 45 years old, was a teenager when he sexually assaulted and killed Sr Philomena Lyons.

According to the Irish Sunday Mirror, he has been given a release date from the parole board after spending 24 years locked up.

Sister Philomena was a widely respected nun and teacher who was waiting on the bus when she was set upon.

Herron was 19 when he attacked the Cork born nun in the grounds of the Sacred Heart Convent, Ballybay, Co Monaghan on the 15th of December 2001.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show today, Nules Ni Chleirigh host of Ireland Crimes and Mysteries podcast, explained how Herron was initially caught for the crime.
