Elsewhere, European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness has hit back at criticism of her Fine Gael colleague, Nina Carberry, from Co Meath. The former champion jockey is on course to win one of the seats in Midlands Northwest. Speaking at the count centre in Castlebar, McGuinness responded to claims that Carberry was untested after having not taking part in debates during the campaign:
