"The loss of both Dlava and Kiea have left the country numb"

A minute’s silence was held this week at the monthly sitting of Monaghan County Council in honour of Dlava Mohammed and Kiea McCann.

Best friends 16-year old Dlava Mohammed and 17-year old Kiea McCann died while on their way to a debs ball in Monaghan on the evening of July 31st.

The Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, David Maxwell described the tragic loss of the two bright girls as a very sad summer for the people of the region. Cllr Maxwell paid tribute to the emergency services that attended the scene on that fatal night and he also added that the local retained firefighters also need to be commended for their work.

He highlighted to the fact that on that fatal evening, Clones retained firefighters were on the picket line striking at the time but when the call came that there was a collision near the town, fire officers went straight to the scene. Local Councillor Pat Treanor joined his other councillor colleagues in expressing his sympathies to both the girl's family and friends.

Cllr Treanor said that the tragic loss of Dlava and Kiea has brought back some difficult memories for other family members who unfortunately have lost loved ones in similar circumstances and he wanted to express his sympathies to them also.

Cllr PJ O’Hanlon said that there are no words to describe what these families have gone through and continue to do so. He said he wanted to pay his deepest heartfelt condolences to their families, friends and to Largy College.

Cllr Colm Carthy said that the loss of both Dlava and Kiea have left the country numb. He said that I feel every parent in the country gave their child an extra squeeze that night and he also paid tribute to Largy College and The Clones Family Resource Centre for being their at this terrible time for the area.

Cllr Hugh McElvaney said that this was an awful tragedy and he wished the others injured in the collision a speedy recovery. Cllr Paudge Connolly also wanted to express his sympathies in what he described was an absolute tragedy and he wanted to thank local firefighters and all the emergency services who were in attendance at this fatal collision in Clones
