An MEP for the Midlands North West, which includes Cavan and Monaghan, has been speaking ahead of a meeting in Mullingar today.
Famers across Ireland are facing significant cuts to EU payments from 2028 under proposed changes to the Common Agricultural Policy.
There was an outcry in farming circles last year when it emerged the amount of money earmarked for the next cap is set to be cut by 22%.
The finer details of the programme need to be negotiated today, MEP Barry Cowen said that the event he is hosting this evening brings key people to the table who will shape the parliaments position on the next CAP.
He noted that there is huge commitment made to defence and security which curtails the amount available to CAP.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show today, MEP Cowen was asked if there is the Irish Government willing to step in to offset that likely funding gap.
In response he said it can increase its contribution, but some BLOC member states would rather invest in tanks than tractors.
