President Michael D. Higgins has spent the night in hospital.
He was admitted to St. James’s Hospital in Dublin yesterday evening for treatment of a localised infection.
Áras an Uachtaráin says the 84-year-old president, who remained in hospital overnight to receive antibiotics, is "in good spirits".
He is due to complete his second term in office on November 10th, when Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated as his successor.
President Higgins, who suffered a mild stroke last year, plans to return to his home in Galway.
