Upgrade works include the widening of the greenway; the provision of an asphalt concrete surface, drainage improvements and installing public lighting along the length of the greenway.

The Monaghan Town Greenway from the Coolshannagh Roundabout to Old Cross Square will remain closed until the 12th of August, despite initial estimates that it would re-open in early July.

Local people who use the amenity have taken issue with the closure and have pointed out that a more "appropriate time" to carry out the works could have been chosen by Monaghan Co council given that residents and visitors are enjoying the peak summer season.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr David Maxwell said the current situation is "impacting everyone" and that contractors "can't do every job in the winter."

He added that if members of the Council "had their way," December and January would have been the "optimum time" to carry out such works.

While the works were originally scheduled to last for only 6-8 weeks, after a contract was issued to upgrade the Ulster Canal Greenway on May 5th, Cllr Maxwell believes when completed, the extended wait will be "worthwhile."
