'There is that continuity of care and that is hugely rewarding'

People can't access GP services across Cavan and Monaghan.

That's according to Monaghan doctor and Medical Director of the out of hours service, Ilona Duffy who says people are ringing the service due to having no GP.

Dr Duffy says it was a crisis waiting to happen and one that has been ignored by both the HSE and successive Governments.

The local GP added that everyone should have the right to a GP.

She said that GPs are retiring and younger doctors to not regard the sector as viable.

"What we have got to do is make it something that's attractive," Dr Duffy continued.

"To be honest a GP is a wonderful life and of all the carers in medicine it's the only one I would choose.

"Because there is that continuity of care and that is hugely rewarding.

"But, unfortunately if younger doctors don't see it as a rewarding career they won't choose it."
