Monaghan County Councillor heard the Litter Management Plan for 2026 - 2029.
Objectives and actions for the plan include education and awareness, partnership and community support, education and awareness, partnership and community support and active engagement.
The Litter Pollution Act 1997 obliges local authorities to review the litter management plan periodically and to amend or replace it where required.
For the updated plan, Monaghan County Council consulted with all interested parties and statement and create a robust plan.
It was noted that tackling litter is a shared responsibility between the local authority, the public and businesses.
Some key observations from 2021-2025 were that pedestrians and motorists remain top causes, but both decreased slightly, retail outlets, gathering points, leisure places and fast food outlets all increased and fly-tipping/ dumping rose from 2.2% to 2.6%.
Tidy Towns groups across Monaghan were praised for their work and noted to be on an upward trajectory.
Some of the principal future litter challenges identified included illegal dumping, dog fouling, chewing gum, cigarettes and vapes, litter from convenience outlets and fly tipping from pedestrians/ motorists.
The main objectives of the Litter Management Plan 2026 - 2029 include, education and awareness programmes, partnership and community support, local authority litter prevention and control actions and enforcement and regulation.
In conclusion it was noted that the three year plan aims to address the littering issues while promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.
