'I think young people are learning their limits in so many aspects of life and that includes with alcohol'

Discussions around putting an end to 'marathon' drinking sessions and placing the duty of care on publicans have entered the public domain.

It comes after random attacks of violence over the last few weeks on people out socialising in local towns.

There are calls for regulations similar to the New Zealand model whereby it is illegal for publicans to serve alcohol to a person who is becoming drunk.

Caolan Faux from Monaghan is the Director of Youth Work Ireland and he says while it is a good idea, it is an initiative that would be difficult to enforce.

He highlighted how his experience of publicans in Ireland is that they are already exercising a certain duty of care and often go to the trouble of driving customers home at the end of the night.

"I don't think that we can particularly say that young people are seeing this as a culture," added Mr Faux.

"And yes they have drunk themselves to pollution stage but over-drinking is across all age groups."
