Monaghan native Deirdre O’Connor has been elected Deputy General Secretary of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation.

The election took place in December last, and Deirdre will succeed Noel Ward as Deputy General Secretary and General Treasurer.

Mr Ward announced his intention to step down from the position in September, which triggered an election for a successor.

Over 13,000 members of the union cast a ballot in the election, with Ms O’Connor winning 68 per cent of the vote on the first count.

Ms O’Connor will take over as Deputy General Secretary/General Treasurer later in 2021.

Deirdre taught in St. Mary’s Boys National School in Monaghan town for 13 years, and says she is “honoured to have been elected by the members of INTO”.
