Monaghan property 'preserved for examination' following fatal fire

A man aged in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man has died following a fire at an apartment building in Monaghan Town. Gardaí along with emergency services attended the scene at Rowantree Court in Mulach Glas shortly after 8pm yesterday evening. A man aged in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene. An area remains preserved at Rowntree Court located close to Monaghan Hospital following the fire that occurred at approximately 8pm last night. A man in his 70s was fatally injured during the incident. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Gardaí have said that the results of this post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.

However, it is understood that at this stage, foul play is not suspected. Locals say they are shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news. All the residents of the 25 apartment block were evacuated for a number of hours last night. The deceased man is believed to have lived in Monaghan for almost 50 years and had lived at the property for a long number of years. Extensive damage has been caused to the property following the fire and the scene remains preserved for a technical examination.
