A Monaghan Senator has raised concerns surrounding a shortage of batteries and pads for defibrillators.
Robbie Gallagher put a question to the Minister of Health to address the serious issue.
Senator Gallagher said it's estimated there are up to 9,000 defibrillators located in communities, sports clubs, and public buildings across the country, many funded by local volunteers, families, and businesses.
However, he noted only around half are officially registered, and many are now at risk of being unusable due to difficulties sourcing replacement batteries and pads.
The Department of Health has said it is engaging with regulators and suppliers to investigate the issue.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said working defibrillators can mean the difference between life and death.
