The MSPCA is warning pet owners that a dog is for life, not just for lockdown.

The demand for dogs greatly increased during the lockdown, with people travelling long distances to purchase one.

Sinead McKenna, Kennel Manager at the MSPCA, has voiced concern that there may be an influx in pet owners surrendering their dogs as restrictions ease and people return to work.

A recent Shannonside Northern Sound Freedom of Information request found that 129 dogs were surrendered by their owners in Monaghan last year, while 248 abandoned or stray dogs were admitted to the dog pound or MSPCA shelter.
