A member of the National Public Health Emergency Team says there are still 'considerable concerns' about the spread of Covid-19 in the midlands.

A NPHET meeting is underway to consider whether the lockdown in Laois, Offaly and Kildare should be lifted.

The restrictions are due to end on Sunday, after being in place for the past two weeks.

Speaking before attending this morning's meeting, Dr Mary Favier said the situation remains worrying.

Locally, Cavan has seen 882 confirmed Covid-19 cases while Monaghan has seen a slight increase in cases in recent days with 550 recorded.

However, local GP Dr Illona Duffy this week warned of a possible outbreak in Monaghan.

Meanwhile, a junior minister has conceded there's been an "overlap in messaging" over some of the Covid 19 restrictions.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has said parents shouldn't attend their childrens' matches - despite the GAA saying one parent could watch games from the sidelines.

There's also been confusion over how many people are allowed attend theatres and cinemas with Government Departments issuing differing advice.

Junior minister Peter Burke says the government needs to clarify what the advice is.
