'There is a need to progress this project as soon as possible'

A new oncology day unit at Cavan General Hospital is "under consideration" by the HSE. That's according to Cavan Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy Brendan Smith, who says he received confirmation from the health authority that a capital submission for the new Unit was discussed by the National Capital and Property Steering Group, recently.

He says the HSE stated that the project will be considered for inclusion in the Capital Plan for 2023 and that prioritisation process will commence shortly. These latest developments emerged following a parliamentary question tabled by Deputy Smith in respect of services at the local hospital.

He added how there was a need for the cancer services in the region because of the large number of of patients in Cavan and Monaghan trying to access them. "This welcome reply from the HSE follows on from Parliamentary Questions I tabled in Dáil Éireann highlighting the need to progress this project in view of the inadequate accommodation facilities at Cavan General Hospital at present.

"I also spoke to Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, about the great value and importance of these cancer services for large numbers of patients in Cavan, Monaghan and neighbouring areas and the resultant pressure on staff who work extremely hard in outdated accommodation," Deputy Smith added.
