A local woman has raised her concerns over water supply issues in Cavan Town. Bernadette Jabbar and her young family were left without water for a total of six days. With water supply issues impacting households in the Kilnavara Heights and Kilnavara Crescent areas, Bernadette criticised the efforts made by Uisce Éireann in dealing with the matter. Although the situation has now been resolved, the local mother described the lack of action made by Uisce Éireann as an "absolute disgrace."
She added that more "communication" and "support" needs to be provided by the organisation so that no family has to experience what she did over the last number of days. Speaking to Northern Sound, Bernadette stated; "For six days we have had no water in our home and in the surrounding homes. For the first four days there was no water at all, day and night. The neighbours and I over the last six days were on the phone with Uisce Éireann asking them to fix this. But even six days later we still had little flowing water, no reasons why were provided and no support or help from Uisce Éireann at all. We were not even offered a temporary tanker for the estate to help the residents. I’m so ashamed to say that we could not even flush our toilets and for my poor 11-year-old to be able to go to school clean, we had to wash him with a bucket of water from the kettle. It was an absolute disgrace.”
In a statement issued to Northern Sound at that time, Uisce Éireann replied; "There are currently water supply issues in Cavan Town. A major leak detection programme is underway to identify leaks to solve the issue. To maintain daytime supply to homes and businesses, this work is mainly carried out at night as it is necessary to cut off sections of the mains at night in order to carry out this work.
"Crews are making every effort to restore normal water supply to impacted properties in the Kilnavara heights/Kilnavara Crescent area as quickly as possible."
