Over 1,500 babies were born in the Northern Sound region last year.
According to new CSO figures, the number of women aged 45 or older who gave birth to a child jumped significantly.
Last year, a total of 1,656 babies were born in Cavan and Monaghan last year. 930 of these were born to Cavan residents and 726 to Monaghan residents. The number is a slight drop on the 2023 figure of 1,698. Notably, there was a significant increase in the number of babies born to mothers aged 45 or older. In Cavan, this cohort accounted for 10 births, while in Monaghan that figure was 3, giving it a total of 13.
This compares to just 1 in Cavan in 2023 and 3 in Monaghan the same year.
In total last year, 54,026 babies were born, a slight drop on 2023's figure of 54,622.
