The Irish Wildlife Trust says a river ecosystem has been devastated following a fish kill in a river that runs through Co Cavan.
It follows confirmation from Inland Fisheries Ireland yesterday more than 20,000 fish died as a result of agricultural discharge in the River Glyde, Co Louth.
The source of the pollution has since been stopped and a file is now being prepared for potential prosecution.
IFI estimates that more than 20,000 fish have died in the incident over an approximate 25km stretch of the river.
The impacted area spans from Aclint Bridge, Co Monaghan to Lynns Weir, Castlebellingham, Co Louth.
Fish mortalities include Atlantic salmon, eel, brown trout, pike, minnow, and coarse fish species.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Minister of State for Fisheries and the Marine, Timmy Dooley said that he is thankful to the IFI for its quick response.
