€12,299.32 worth of non-perishable food and household items were collected by Cavan Tesco as part of its annual food appeal. The appeal saw customers nationally donate €230,000 worth of goods with a Tesco top-up of 20% bringing the total to over €275,000.
It will be used to support local community organisations in partnership with FoodCloud. In Cavan, support will be provided to a number of causes countywide including Breffni Integrated Clg and Teach Na nDaoine.
Natasha Adams, Tesco Ireland CEO, said many families were under pressure this year and the donations would make "a real difference" to many lives this Christmas. "Our partners at FoodCloud are redistributing twice the amount of food since pre-pandemic levels and the demand for food is growing.
"As an extra little help this Christmas, we want to give our support to these communities and will top up the Christmas Food Appeal food donations by 20% to support those in need. Thank you to all our customers and colleagues who donated, they will make a real difference in supporting our communities.
Meanwhile, since 2013, the equivalent of €1.5m has been collected in food donations which have been shared with those in need in local communities. Tesco was the first retailer to partner nationally with FoodCloud in 2014, working as part of a concerted effort to ensure no good food goes to waste.
Since 2014, Tesco has donated the equivalent of over seventeen million meals through its Surplus Food Donations Programme to more than 380 community groups throughout Ireland.
