'Parents are going without food' says local St Vincent de Paul volunteer

'It’s awful to be talking about food poverty in this day and age - We are taking calls from people who have never needed St Vincent de Paul before'

Parents are going without food so they can give their children a decent meal.

That is the stark reality of many households across the Northern Sound region according to Madeline Ui Mhealoid of St Vincent de Paul in Cavan.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, Madeline outlined the difficulties families are facing this Christmas, with many dreading the festive season.

According to the local volunteer, calls to the Cavan branch are up three fold since September, with an unprecedented number of calls for food, fuel and rent.

She added that while this is the worst ever year for hard-hit families, all volunteers at St Vincent de Paul in Cavan will to try their best to cope with demand and assist families in any way they can:
