Pet owners urged of dangers during hot weather

All pet owners need to be aware of the dangers that heat can have on their animals.

With high temperatures expected to stay for the next week, people are being urged across the region to be mindful of their pets in the heat.

A High Temperature Advisory has taken affect from today until midday on Friday.

Temperatures reached 29 degrees yesterday and temperatures across the Shannonside Northern Sound region are expected to say in the high 20s until next Friday.

The DSPCA is asking the public not to walk their pets in the middle of the day and keep the house cool for them along with supplying adequate drinking water at all times.

Gillian Bird from the charity says pet owners should not bring their animals in the car while we are experiencing such high temperatures.

Some tips to care for your pet in this warm weather.

1 Don't leave your furry friend in the car.
2 Don't walk your dog in the middle of the day.
3 Ensure there's plenty of fresh, clean water.
4 Be extra careful at the poolside.
5 Keep toxic chemicals away.
6 Don't shave your pets. .
7 Be aware of the signs of heat stroke.
8 Don’t share your barbeque
9 Find a spot in the shade
