There are hopes that the development of a Greenway along the old Ballybay railway line could eventually link up with other parts of the county.

There are hopes that the development of a Greenway along the old Ballybay railway line could eventually link up with other parts of the county.

Under the Ballybay Path Network project, which the council say includes more than constructing missing sections of path, an area of greenway is being worked on.

The greenway would run along the former line, while another area from Smithboro to Clones is also being developed.

Members want to create an opportunity to reduce car dependency locally, open the railway heritage, and improve overall connectivity.

Fine Gael councillor Sean Gilliland asked if a gateway could be planned that would allow for the sections in Ballybay and Clones to be linked.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound councillor Gilliland explained that proper planning now could allow for greater development of the greenway network across Monaghan in the future:
