'The area was identified as a coverage blackspot'

An Bord Pleanala has refused permission for a 39 metre high mast in Rossmore Park.

Cignal Infrastructre had been seeking permission for the mobile and broadband tower in the Monaghan town forest park, saying the area was identified as a coverage blackspot.

Monaghan County Council refused permission last year, with the applicant appealing this decision to An Bord Pleanala.

Having considered the appeal and observations from those opposed to the development, the planning authority refused permission, saying it would be "a permanent, intrusive man-made structure in the skyline".

The inspector ruled that the mast would have "moderate to significant" landscape and visual impacts on Rossmore Park and surrounding areas if approved.
