The plans include the introduction of spawning gravel to improve breeding habitats for trout.

Inland Fisheries Ireland have sought planning permission for the rehabilitation and improvement of a 1.5km stretch of the Mountnugent River. The purposed stretch includes the townlands of Cornagrow, Derrylurgan, Derrylaha and Lisdonnish.

Works will include removal of some in-stream vegetation, repair and reinstatement of existing in-stream structures, improvement and alteration of flow dynamics by the construction of deflectors.

The reinforcement of the river bank in some locations and the introduction of spawning gravel to improve breeding habitats for trout are also planned. An appropriate assessment and an NIS has been submitted as part of this application. County planners will decide on this application by the end of March.
