Catherine Connolly says she wouldn't hire someone who was on the sex offenders' register as a staff member.
The comments came during the first head to head debate between herself and Heather Humphreys yesterday. This followed a radio interview in which Connolly said she would give consideration to hiring someone convicted of sexual crimes.
The two candidates also debated foreign policy with Heather Humphreys going at Connolly over her criticisms of EU allies. Presidential hopeful Heather Humphreys says she has no plans to meet with the Taoiseach, to seek an official endorsement from Fianna Fail.
The Fine Gael candidate has gained support from some Fianna Fail TDs following Jim Gavin’s withdrawal from the race. She says she’ll continue to campaign for everyone’s vote.
She says it's important the president speaks for the young people of Ireland. The Fine Gael candidate was in Wexford earlier, where she fired up a Harley Davidson, before making her way to Waterford, where she got stuck into a bit of farming. She will continue her campaign in Fermoy, County Cork this afternoon. If elected, Humphreys says she will set up a council of youth.
