A Monaghan County Councillor has highlighted concerns of the pressure on women going through certain treatment for breast cancer.
Niamh McCooey raised the issue at the recent full meeting of Monaghan County Council.
She want to see women undergoing hormone therapy for breast cancer be provided, free of charge with any necessary medication to manage the effects of treatment induced early-onset menopause.
She called on the local authority to write to Jennifer Carroll MacNeill highlighting the request.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Sinead Flynn, with full council agreement.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McCooey said no woman already facing the challenges of breast cancer should be forced to carry an additional financial burden for essential treatment.
"I suppose cancer, not only does it affect the person who is having the treatment and the women who are having the treatment but it affects the whole family and not only emotionally and mentally but now this is obviously another financial burden which families and women should not have to shoulder. These medications should be covered free of charge by the government and for women who are affected by breast cancer and or similar similar hormone sensitive conditions."
