The INMO is calling on the RCSI Group to clarify the future of Cavan’s midwife-led maternity unit.
The union today met with the Minister for Health who said he had “unequivocal” support of the service.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation raised the issue directly with Simon Harris, where it was confirmed the Department of Health saw no threat to service.

Over 9,500 people have signed an online petition calling for the unit to be saved, after it was revealed last weekend that it could be closed, downgraded or merged with a consultant-led service.
The Cavan midwife-led units is one of only two in the country, with more planned as part of the National Maternity Strategy.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, INMO’s Industrial Relations Officer David Miskell said the management of Cavan General Hospital must make clear what the future of the unit will be.
Speaking following the announcement, INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha said, "We should be opening more midwife-led units, not closing or downgrading the two we have. Units like this are crucial to implement the National Maternity Strategy."

Cavan General Hospital and the RCSI Group have been contacted by Northern Sound News for comment.

Meanwhile, a petition to save the Midwifery Led Unit at Cavan General Hospital has passed 9,500 signatures.

The online campaign started over the weekend, when it was announced that it could merge with a consultant-led service later this year.
Sinn Fein TD Pauline Tully says the merger is something that mustn’t go ahead.
