A Co. Cavan nursing home was found to be not compliant with eight regulations of the Health Act 2007.
St Joseph's Nursing Home in Lurgan Glebe Virginia received an unannounced inspection on the 24th July 2025.
The centre provides 24-hour nursing care to 52 residents who require long and short term care.
At the time of the inspection there were 43 residents in the centre.
As part of the process HIQA inspectors speak with residents, people who visit them, staff and management, observe practice and daily life and review documents.
The nursing home was found compliant across 10 regulations, substantially compliant with one and not compliant across eight.
Records, notification of incidents, complaints procedure, visits, personal possessions, food and nutrition, temporary absence or discharge of residents, risk management, health care and protection were all found to be compliant.
Contract for the provision of services was found to be substantially compliant.
The regulations found to be non-compliant were staffing, training and staff development, governance and management, premises, infection control, individual assessment and care plan, managing behaviour that is challenging and residents' rights.
Overall, the inspector noted that the residents were relaxed and generally content with their surroundings and they spoke positively about the staff caring for them.
They also observed that interactions between residents and staff were empathetic and respectful, care staff were seen to ask the resident's permission
before commencing care interventions. Residents who were non-verbal appeared comfortable in the presence of staff.
All residents who spoke with the inspectors were complimentary in their feedback regarding the staff caring for them and the service they provided.
Residents' comments included that the staff were 'more than kind', 'always smiling' and 'nothing was ever a problem for them'.
