Shock and sadness in Carrickmacross following death of popular mechanic

Motorsport Ireland says it has begun a full investigation alongside Gardaí into the circumstances of the accident.

Tributes have continued to pour in following the tragic deaths of two local men during the Sligo Stages Rally yesterday afternoon,

35-year-old Gene McDonald, and 46-year-old Daire Maguire, died when their car hit a wall during the sixth stage.

Though a native of bordering county Fermanagh, Daire Maguire worked in Cavan town for many years up until only a few weeks ago.

Motorsport Ireland says it has begun a full investigation alongside Gardaí into the circumstances of the accident.

Meanwhile, Gene McDonald ran a busy garage for over 10 years in Carrickmacross and was a very popular mechanic in the area

Local Councilor Colm Carthy says there is a widespread sense of shock and sadness in Carrickmacross following the conformation of the Cootehill native's death.

Cllr Carthy says the shock of this tragic news has now turned to great sadness for people right across the region.
