A trade union body says it is “extremely disappointed” that Meat Industry Ireland won't engage with them on striking a deal for sick pay terms for workers.

SIPTU and MII held talks yesterday on workplace safety in the wake of a spate of Covid-19 outbreaks at meat plants in the midlands that led to three counties being locked down.

Greg Ennis, SIPTU’s divisional officer, says something needs to be done to ensure workers in the sector will not go into work with covid-19 symptoms.

Mr Ennis says he was disappointed that MII do not have a mandate to engage collectively on sick pay.

He told The Wider View that while progress has been made in discussions with MII, a “commonality of purpose” has been missing throughout the pandemic:
