Sky's the limit for migrant volunteers in Carrickmacross

Sandra Liberty who is originally from Nigeria said she finds volunteering extremely rewarding and says it's a great way of bringing people together.

A Monaghan resident believes more of a focus should be put on the many positive interactions that occur between migrant groups and local communities right across the country.

Barbara integrates migrants from local IPAS centres into communities through volunteering projects which she delivers right across Co Monaghan.

She believes this is a "great way" for members of the migrant community to be part of something, to work hard, have a common goal, interact with people in local communities and contribute to community life in a fun and positive way.

Barbara said some of the major milestones that the volunteering group have achieved include working on projects with Carrickmacross Tidy Towns and developing the popular Carrickmacross World Choir.

Barbara said the choir which was started last September and brings people together through a universal love for music.

The choir consists of local people from the Carrickmacross area and people from many different countries.

Barbara said it's great to see people from the M Hotel based outside Carrick walk through the town and know people through their work in volunteering within the community or taking part in the choir.

Speaking to Northern Sound, the local worker praised the town of Carrickmacross when it comes to being inclusive towards people from other cultures:

Meanwhile, Sandra Liberty is a member of the Monaghan migrant volunteering group.

Sandra is originally from Nigeria and has been living in Carrickmacross for the last two years.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Sandra said she finds volunteering extremely rewarding and says it's a great way of bringing people together.
