A local TD has welcomed the reopening of the Chinese market for Irish beef.
The Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the Minister for Agriculture, Martin Heydon, made the announcement yesterday.
It follows an announcement by the General Administration of Customs in China (GACC) regarding the reopening of access to the Chinese market for beef produced in Ireland.
Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Niamh Smyth has welcomed the news.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the local TD said that it is good news for farming families in the region.
She explained that the Chinese market has one of the biggest "possibilities" for a trade market.
Minister of State Smyth said that Ireland can no longer rely on the US for trade in the same vein.
She said: "We now know we can no longer rely on our US counterparts and colleagues in the same vein we have been able to in the past.
"That uncertainty has reshaped and refocused Europe's view of the world. Its a global dilemma we find ourselves in.
"The announcement brings a little bit of comfort, and a new dawn and horizon in terms of the beef trade," Minister of State Smyth added.
