A local teenager has received a Special Achievement Award at the annual National Garda Youth Awards.

Sara Marza from Carrickmacross was recognised for her fundraising efforts for children in Syria who have benefitted greatly by her efforts.

Sara and her family made the very brave and difficult decision to seek refuge in Ireland from the ongoing war in Syria. The journey to Ireland and asylum was fraught with dangers with Sara and her family having to be rescued at sea and Sara also permanently lost the ability to hear in one ear.

Not even that could hold her back though and Sara has gone on to learn three languages as a student in Inver College in Carrickmacross. The ceremony, which recognises exceptional young people aged 13-21 who have positively contributed to their community, took place on Saturday at the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise.

Sara has shown her school community and the town of Carrickmacross that really it doesn’t matter where any of us come from, we are all one and should always be respectful, kind and appreciative of one another.
